Huet, who became a member of the Académie in 1769, was able to achieve considerable success with his ‘natural’ depictions of animals. As the date in the present pair of paintings – indicated as year IX of the Revolutionary Calendar – suggests, Huet dealt with these subjects also during and after the French Revolution.
