(active in Antwerp, late 15th/early 16th century) The Adoration of the Magi,
oil on panel, 103 x 70 cm, framed
Provenance:
Theological college of Belchite, near Saragossa/Spain; Guerin Collection, Barcelona
Literature:
M. J. Friedländer, Der Meister des Morrison Triptychons, in: Zeitschrift für Bildende Kunst, XXVI, Leipzig, 1914/15, p. 16; Id., Die Altniederländische Malerei, 1924, vol. VII, p. 129, no. 82; Id., Early Netherlandish Painting, VII, Leiden 1967, p. 70, no. 82, ill. 71
This painting originally formed the central panel of a triptych whose side wings were lost. Max J. Friedländer attributed the altar to the Master of the Morrison Triptych, an anonymous painter named after an altar that was formerly in the Alfred Morrison Collection (Toledo Museum of Art, Toledo, Ohio). Friedländer compiled a group of eight paintings by this artist, with a close affinity among the present painting and the “Adoration of the Magi” in the collection John G. Johnson (Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia), both in their composition and figural typology. In 1955 Wilhelm Valentiner tentatively identified the Master of the Morrison Triptych as the painter Simon van Herlam, whose figures were influenced by Geertgen tot Sint Jans.
