The present Lot is registered in the Archivio Storico delle Arti contemporanei delle Biennale di Venezia under the number 1172.

Born in Livorno, Plinio Nomellini attended the School of Arts and Crafts 1878-84. He then studied in Florence under Giovanni Fattori, befriending Silvestro Lega, Telemaco Signorini and other members of the Macchiaioli group.

After 1899 he used the Venice Biennale to promote his works. There he met other international contemporary artists such as Franz von Stuck and James McNeil Whistler.

The present lot was exhibited at the XIVth Venice Biennale in 1924, which included seven other works by Nomellini.
It was painted in a Divisionist technique with small dashes of paint to create light. The sitter appears to be the light source.
She has long, wavy red hair with a magnificent peacock feather, which can be seen as a sign of vanity or beauty.
