August Friedrich Hopfgarten was a student at the Academy of Arts in Berlin; there, thanks to his painting “Akrisius, his daughter Danae and her son Perseus”, he was granted a scholarship to study in Rome. Hopfgarten lived in the eternal city, where he was member of the German painters circle, for more than 5 years. He painted mainly romantic landscapes with historical scenes or portraits of his fellow painters; subjects he continued working on upon his return in Germany.
