Allan Ramsay was one of the leading British portraitists of the eighteenth century. He received his commissions from the Scottish aristocracy and wealthy patricians. After returning from his two-year stay in Italy (1757–1759), King George III appointed him first court painter. He was highly productive in this function, painting numerous portraits of the monarch and members of the royal family and the royal household.
