Marten van Cleve I
(Antwerp circa 1527 - before 1581)
Carousing peasants,
oil on panel, 35 x 42 cm, framed
The present painting comes with a certificate issued by Klaus Ertz (March 2017). He dates the work into the late 1570s. Ertz writes: “The dog frequently used for scenes set in interiors (such as in At the Midwife’s House or Assaults on Peasants) is typical of Van Cleve’s art, as is the view of the outside surroundings. On the left or right, the spectator’s eye is directed through an open window or door to buildings or parts of a landscape.”
