Joachim Wtewael

[Saleroom Notice]
Joachim Wtewael - Obrazy starých mistrů

(Utrecht 1566–1638)
Charity,
oil on panel, 38.4 x 59 cm, framed

Provenance:
sale, Bonhams Knightsbridge, 29 April 2015, lot 3 (as Studio of Joachim Anthonisz Wtewael)

Literature:
Anne W. Lowenthal, Joachim Wtewael and Dutch Mannerism, Doornspijk 1986, p. 152, no. A-89

Lowenthal writes in her Catalogue Raisonné: “A date in the 1620s is indicated by the mellow colour scheme, the concentrated grouping of figures closely linked by glance and gesture and the serene expressive quality […]. Although the furniture and utensils are seventeenth-century Dutch in style, this is an allegory, in which the woman personifies Caritas, or pure selfless love. In contrast, the monkey symbolises sensuality and bestiality, and the cat, hungrily jumping up at the child’s food, carnal appetite. The apples, fruits of the Tree of Knowledge of Goodness and Evil, signify choice, in this case between liefde and minne. The fire is an emblem of love, more precisely, to judge from the two scorched apples beside it, of sensual love. The grapes, a central focus, could allude either to the Eucharist, an expression of Christ’s love for mankind, or to sensual love.”

Saleroom Notice:

The present painting was offered at Bonham’s, London, on the 29 April 2015 with the wrong measurements. Therefore it was not identified as being in Anne Lowenthal’s Catalogue raisonné as number A-89.
