The present painting repeats Van Dyck’s famous portrait of Cardinal Bentivoglio from 1623 in the Palazzo Pitti in Florence. The cardinal, a successful diplomat in the service of the Holy See, served as nuncio in Flanders and France. His book “Della Guerra di Fiandra”, which was published in 1639, is a standard work of seventeenth-century historiography.
