Oceania, Island of New Ireland and Solomon Islands: a forehead ornament for men, called ‘Kap kap’. Made from a disc of shell, covered with tortoiseshell.
‘Kap kap’ is the name of a headdress for men, which was worn on a wide, woven headband directly on the forehead or on the side on the temple. This object was used in the north of the Island of New Ireland (northeast of New Guinea), as well as on the Western Solomon Islands. The rank of its bearer could be inferred from the rings and patterns on the ornament’s tortoiseshell application. For a more detailed explanation see cat. no. 351.
The present, relatively small ‘kap kap’ features two rings with patterns encircling a central motif on its finely executed tortoiseshell application. A small age-related loss to the outer rim of the shell disc and several pieces broken off in the filigree patterns of the tortoiseshell.
A visibly old piece, originally crafted with a keen eye for detail.
Diameter: 9 cm. Between the 19th century and the first third of the 20th century. (ME)
Provenance: French private collection.
Lit.: See cat. no. 351.
