New Guinea, Middle Sepik River: a crested object in the form of a mask, with large, long oval eyes and decorated with cassowary feathers. tribes: Iatmul or Sawos. - Mimoevropské a domorodé umění

A crested object used to top a post or as a house mask in a men’s house. Carved as a single piece from light-coloured wood and originally dyed black in its entirety. The mask-like head is long, narrow, has a central ridge and a ‘human’ nose at the front. Underneath this there is an open animal’s mouth with teeth.
On the underside of the mask there is a round ‘spout’ which was carved from the same piece, but there are no fastening eyelets for a mask costume. This implies that this object is not a mask for dancing in; rather, it is a ritual crest to top a post or as a house mask in a men’s house.
The eyes are made from two overlaid long oval discs, each with a blunt cone positioned centrally as the pupil. This style is common to the carvings (such as ancestor figures and masks) of the Iatmul and Sawos tribes of the middle portion of the Sepik River.
At the top, the object has a decorative strip of black cassowary feathers, which are tied on. No significant damage.
Height: c. 37 cm; width: 22 cm. First half of the 20th century. (ME)
