New Guinea, upper Sepik River: a shield from the upper reaches of the Sepik River in the north of New Guinea, with a front side that has been dyed and decorated in relief. - Mimoevropské a domorodé umění

A typical wooden shield, carved from a single piece of a large buttress root from a tree. The front side is decorated with carefully worked relief: the middle axis features four overlapping circles, trimmed with rings and a zig-zag line. A combination of volutes and double spirals encircles the central motif. The outer edge is jagged.
The back is smooth, with four strong, pierced holders made of the same wood for two transverse handholds made of woven rattan strips. The entire shield is dyed with natural earth dyes and soot, turning it dark brown, white and reddish in colour. With two old original repairs: minor cracks to the reverse, glued with resin. Otherwise no damage.
Height: 180 cm; width: c. 28 cm (above) and 66 cm (lower middle). First half to mid-20th century. (ME)
