Only the inhabitants of the Mentawai Islands know how to make boat paddles using this technique (the Mentawai Islands include the Islands of Siberut, Sipora etc.) to the southwest of Sumatra. Flat, broad, pointed ovals made of wood form paddle shovels that are pierced twice along their central axis and affixed crosswise with rattan strips to long paddle shafts that are carved at the top. That is all it takes to make a traditional, typical Mentawai paddle.
The two present Mentawai paddles, which are also interesting objects from a cultural-historical point of view, are old and have been used over a protracted period of time. One paddle shovel displays early original repairs to small cracks (‘sewn’ together with rattan strips). The other paddle shovel has a small piece broken off from the outer rim. Otherwise no damage, but with a visibly old, good usage patina. Rare.
Length: 142 cm and 164 cm (the whole paddles); width: 40 cm and 43 cm (the paddle shovels). Between c. 1900 and the first third of the 20th century. (ME)
