Mixed lot (4 pieces): Indonesia, Java, Bali: 4 medium-sized shadow theatre figures made of painted leather, known as ‘wayang kulit’ figures. - Mimoevropské a domorodé umění

The traditional ‘wayang kulit’ shadow theatre in Java and Bali includes more than 100 different figures.
The 4 present medium-sized figures include the Hindu god Shiva (also known as Bathara Guru in Indonesia): a figure with four arms (although none of these arms are movable). Shiva stands atop his mythical steed, the bull Nandi, and he holds a trident on both of the outer sides, the symbol of this god. With a tall crown of the gods.
Height: 54 cm (without holding stick).
Additionally: Bhima, a god and king from the Indian epic ‘Mahabharata’. Here in the form of King Tuhu Wasésa. Bhima adopted this name when he was king of the fantasy country of Gilingwesi. With a black face and a tall crown of the gods. As god king, Bhima is easily recognised thanks to his plaid hip scarf and his large, deathly thumbnails.
Height: 72 cm (without holding stick).
A further ‘wayang kulit’ figure in this lot depicts Ghatotkacha (or Gandrung), the son of Bhima: he is a much-feared warrior, and also a figure from the epic ‘Mahabharata’. With a black head and a black hairstyle that curves upwards.
Height: 59 cm (without holding stick).
Along with a shadow theatre figure depicting Trikaya, a son of the evil demon king Ravana, from the ‘Ramayana’ epic. This ‘wayang kulit’ figure has a holding stick made of black horn.
Height: 57 cm (without holding stick). All four shadow theatre figures only have minor age damage (colour scuffed, and some small pieces broken off). Otherwise in good condition.
First half of the 20th century. (ME)
