Philippines, north island of Luzon, tribe: Bontoc: a ‘fikum’ hip decoration for esteemed warriors, made from the shell of a pearl mussel, finely engraved. - Mimoevropské a domorodé umění

Amongst the Bontoc, a tribe in the central, northern region of Luzon, only esteemed warriors are allowed to wear these decorated shells, known as ‘fikum’, on their left hip, as a symbol of their valour – as jewellery and as a kind of ‘medal of bravery’. These round fikum discs are cut from the shells of pearl mussels (‘pinctada fucata’, common to warm, tropical parts of the Pacific). The mother of pearl discs, traded in the highlands from the coast, are then pierced twice in the middle and decorated around their edges with engraved fine, geometric patterns. The present fikum disc of a Bontoc warrior has particularly attractive decorative engraving along its edge. There is a small, pierced disc of mother of pearl in the middle which forms the counterpart to the holding strap made of braided rattan, with which the fikum was attached to the belt of the Bontoc warrior.
Diameter: c. 17 cm. First third of the 20th century. (ME)

Provenance: German private collection.

Lit.: ‘The People and Art of the Philippines’ von Casal, Trota Jose, Casino, Ellis & Solheim, Abb. 246, 247.
