Philippines, north island of Luzon, tribe: Bontoc: a ‘fikum’ hip decoration for esteemed warriors, made from the shell of a pearl mussel, finely engraved.
A ‘fikum’ shell disc, worn on the hip belt of esteemed Bontoc warriors as jewellery and a medal of bravery. For a more detailed explanation see cat. no. 318. The present Bontoc fikum disc is larger than that listed under cat. no. 318 (
Diameter: c. 21 cm), but its edge engraving is more simple. There is a small, round, pierced disc made of hard, dark brown wood above the two holes in its middle, used as the counterpart to a holder of woven grey cotton threat, with which the fikum was attached to the belt of a Bontoc warrior.
