Thailand: a Buddha figurine in lavish courtly robes made of bronze, gilded, and standing on a four-tiered base. Style: Rattanakosin, 19th century. - Mimoevropské a domorodé umění

A standing Buddha in lavish courtly robes, with a crown and a tall ‘flame’. An exquisite, detailed bronze cast executed with waste mould technique, and gilded. The crown, clothing and the ‘urna’ on the forehead of the Buddha are also decorated with tiny round mirrored plaques (partly lost).
The Buddha’s left hand is raised in the gesture of wish-granting (‘varada mudra’). He stands atop a four-tiered octagonal or round base, which is also gilded and partially coloured with red lacquer. Behind the base there is a round cast eyelet for the statue to be fixed down (so that it is not stolen). Note the old, shiny usage patina to this eyelet. There is an old crack to the lower portion of the left leg, and the gold leaf is partly flaked off (to the back and face). Otherwise no damage.
Height: 47.5 cm.
An unusually old piece in Rattanakosin style (also called the Bangkok style): Between the late 18th and the early 19th century.

Provenance: From the private collection of the celebrated actor Sieghardt Rupp (1931–2015). (ME)
