Thailand: a bronze bust of a Buddha figurine (a fragment). With the remains of original gilding. Style: Ayutthaya, 15th to 17th century.

Thailand: a bronze bust of a Buddha figurine (a fragment). With the remains of original gilding. Style: Ayutthaya, 15th to 17th century. - Mimoevropské a domorodé umění

A very old bust of a previously larger Buddha figure (a fragment). Cast in bronze, painted black, with visible remains of previous complete gilding.
The Buddha is depicted here in lavish courtly robes, with a winged crown (the tip is missing), ear pendants and opulent jewellery. With three coloured mirrored plaques on the reverse, where even more of the previous gilding is visible.
The attractive face of this Buddha bust clearly indicates the Ayutthaya style of central Thailand (15th to 17th century). The broad, flat, protruding eyebrow arches, lowered eyelids and slightly curved eye slits are typical of the Ayutthaya style. Including a straight, narrow nose and a smiling mouth. Unfortunately, the entire figure has not been preserved, and the bust also has some age-related damage: old pieces broken off at the bottom, and at the right forearm, the left hand, the earring of the right ear etc.
Despite this, the present Buddha bust in bronze is still a very good example of the (probably early) Ayutthaya style.
Height: 18 cm; width: 11 cm. 15th/16th century. (ME)
