Shan, Burma: a pair of beautiful old silver bangles (2 pieces), produced and worn by the Burmese Shan. - Mimoevropské a domorodé umění

This type of tall arm cuff made of silver is common to the Burmese Shan. Atop a tapered basic form made of smooth sheet silver with bead-like curved bands the outer surface is covered with thin woven, very densely packed silver wire that is soldered on.
The decoratively cut sheet silver, curved from the split in the bangle towards the back, is charmingly decorated with soldered silver spheres, flowers and double spirals made of silver wire. This visibly old bangle pair shows noticeable traces of usage (cf. on the inside). No damage.
Height: each c. 8.2 cm;
Diameter: each c. 8 cm (above and below). First half of the 20th century.
This kind, and similar kinds, of bangles are – according to specialist literature – allegedly also common among the Kachin (Burma) and Akha (northern Thailand, Laos). (ME)

Provenance: Austrian private collection.

Lit.: 'A World of Bracelets' von Anne van Cutsem, Abb. S. 264.
