Burma: a sitting Buddha figure made of brass-bronze with a large winged crown, style: Shan-Ava. A Burmese Buddha, cast in brass and sitting on a single-tiered lotus throne in the earth-touching gesture (‘bhumisparsa mudra’).
The Buddha displays a winged crown featuring diverse openwork (typical of the Shan style), ear plugs in the shape of flowers, as well as a detailed pectoral ornament and bangles on both arms. He holds a small fruit between the thumb and forefinger of his right hand as a symbol of fertility and ‘grasping a grain of truth’.
A very attractive cast statuette with some engraving (hairs above the forehead and temples, as well as the edges of the Buddha’s monastic robe on the surface of the seat and on his back). There are only a few, small, old pieces broken off: the top of the tall ‘flame’ at the centre of the crown has been broken off, as has the furthermost spike of the six leaf-like crown spikes, a small part of the left-hand wing of the Buddha’s crown at the top and a minor, small break to the back of the lower edge. Otherwise, no damage.
