Mixed lot (7 items): India: 7 utensils used for chewing betel, all made of metal: 3 pairs of betel tongs, 3 lime boxes and a mortar and pestle.
1: Three pairs of betel tongs to crack areca nuts for betel chewing. One set of tongs is made of iron with decoration in brass and copper. One larger set and one smaller set of betel tongs made of brass, both with iron blades. The larger set of tongs has two stylised dragon heads, dot-in-circle and other decoration, the smaller pair is simple and smooth. All brass parts are cast, punched and engraved. Length: 15 cm; 14 cm; 12 cm.
2: Three lime boxes for slaked lime for betel chewing. Two round boxes, one larger and one smaller. Both composed of two parts, with a hinge and a snap fastener. The larger round lime box is decorated with inlaid copper, as well as volutes and spirals made of copper bands on the top and bottom. A copper spoon for the lime hangs from a short iron chain. The smaller round box is unadorned and smooth, as is the teardrop-shaped lime box. Only its pointed conical lid, attached by a hinge, is encircled with decorative lines and dots, which were cast at the same time. All the parts of the three lime boxes are cast in brass, using the waste mould technique.
Height: 15 cm; 8.6 cm; 6 cm.
3: A small mortar made of brass with an iron pestle for crushing areca nuts for betel chewing. The tall, round brass mortar has a screw top with a hole at the top (for the pestle). The exterior is decorated with continuous bands of lines and dots, as well as engraved triangles. The iron pestle has a conical finial made of brass as a handle at the top, and three sharpened spikes at the bottom.
Height: 14 cm.
All seven objects display noticeable traces of protracted use. Between the 19th and the early 20th centuries. (ME)
