India: a stone relief depicting the Hindu god Vishnu and surrounding figures.
An Indian relief made of grey stone. In the centre it depicts the standing Hindu god Vishnu (the ‘protector’), with a crown, jewellery and four arms. This central figure is sculpted in openwork. Vishnu holds a club and a wheel (the chakra discus), his associated symbols, in the hands of his two uppermost arms. Both lower arms have been broken off. Vishnu stands atop a round base with a double lotus flower. Two additional sculpted secondary figures stand to the left and right next to the base. Nine additional small figures, and two lotus flowers, are depicted in relief on the surrounding stone plate and on the lower base.
Height: 60 cm; width: 25 cm. 19th century or earlier. (ME)
