Mixed lot (4 pieces), Afghanistan: a pair of long Pashtun arm cuffs made of silver, a ‘magic bowl’ made of brass and an amulet made of silver.
1: A pair of long arm cuffs made of silver ( 2 pieces). From the Mangal Pashtuns in the Afghani province of Paktia. Each cuff is crafted in two parts, with hinges and a pin fastener. The top and bottom of each are decorated with two rows of repoussé cones. Three red glass stones are set between these on transversal silver wire.
Height: c. each 12.5 cm;
Diameter: each 5.8 cm (above); 6.5 cm (below).
2: A so-called ‘magic bowl’ made of brass. The inside, outside and upper edge are covered with densely packed inscriptions engraved in Arabic script. Bowls of this type are also known as ‘medicine bowls’ because medicine was mixed in them. These bowls are widespread across the entire Islamic world.
Height: c. 3.5 cm;
Diameter: c. 13.5 cm (above).
3: A round protective amulet made of silver with an arched, incised outer edge. Probably for use on a piece of clothing. The amulet is engraved on the front side: at its centre there is a ‘magic square’ in Arabic numerals. Two bands of engraved Arabic lettering encircle this. There are two eyelets on the reverse which can be used to affix the amulet.
Diameter: c. 7 cm. First third of the 20th century. (ME)
Provenance: Viennese private collection.
