Mixed lot (2 pieces), Yemen, South Africa: a Yemeni curved dagger, so-called ‘jambiya’, with horn hilt, gilded decorative coins and a Zulu club, known as a ‘knobkerrie’, from South Africa.
1: A curved dagger from Yemen, known as a ‘jambiya’, featuring a slightly curved blade with a middle ridge on both sides. The hilt is made of horn (rhinoceros?) and decorated with two gilded decorative coins, a silver strip on the hilt with repoussé flowers and inlaid metal spikes. The sheath is decorated with three large flowers and densely packed foliage made of fine twisted wire, and small round plates of silver alloy, soldered onto sheet silver alloy. Part of the front and the reverse are completely cloaked in red-dyed leather and leather bands. Length: 38 cm (dagger in sheath).
2: A club for throwing and beating, known as a ‘knobkerrie’, used by the Zulu and associated tribes (Xhosa, Ndebele etc.) in South Africa. Carved out of one piece of hard reddish brown wood. The ball-shaped broad top of the club has a short conical projection in its upper section and is set apart from the well-proportioned shaft by a round groove. With old traces of use and hairline cracks to the top of the club as well as an enlarged round, conical base below. Otherwise, no damage. Length: 45 cm.
Both objects in this mixed lot: First third of the 20th century.(ME)
