Mixed lot (4 pieces), Morocco: 2 pairs of Moroccan robe fibulae made of silver, one with enamel and niello from the region around the town of Tiznit, the other from the Souss valley, near Agadir.
Robe fibulae such as these were used by women to hold together and secure their wrap dresses at the shoulders.
1: A pair of fibulae, each engraved from a flat, triangular piece of silver, with projections to the sides, pierced and engraved. Each is decorated with four dome-shaped crests topped with green and yellow enamel. Yellow and green enamel is the typical sign of crafts from the ‘jewellery town’ of Tiznit. To the bottom there is a small flat piece of silver with black niello decoration, and to the top there is a ‘thorn’ to pierce through the fabric of the robe. The ‘thorn’ is also decorated with green and yellow enamel. The semicircular frame hung within this to secure the fabric has a red and a blue glass bead at each end.
Height: each c. 23 cm; width: each c. 14.5 cm.
2: A pair of fibulae of the kind from the Souss valley, near the town of Agadir. Made of cast, engraved silver. Each of the round frames has two blue glass beads at the ends.
Height: each c. 18.5 cm; width: each c. 9.5 cm.
Both pairs of fibulae: Between c. 1900 and the first third of the 20th century. (ME)
