Tabwa, Dem. Rep. of Congo: a Tabwa doll used in the initiation of girls.
The Tabwa live in the south-easternmost corner of Congo, on the border with Tanzania. Tabwa dolls such as the present one play a part in the initiation of girls.
This female doll is carved from hardwood and dyed dark brown. It is in the typical Tabwa style: the face on its head is characteristically tilted upwards (typical for the Tabwa). The head bears a hairstyle made from small rhombus shapes, lines of decorative scars across the forehead, nose and both cheeks, and an open mouth with a row of teeth. The cylindrical body of the doll also bears lines of typical decorative scars. A stylistically perfect piece with a crack to the front of the body, a small crack with a minor piece missing to the left half of the face. Otherwise no damage. The entire object has an attractive shiny patina as a result of the protracted use of this Tabwa doll.
