Mixed lot (2 pieces), Lega (also Warega or Rega), Dem. Rep. of Congo: two conical Lega hats, known as ‘mukuba’.
These woven caps display the rank of a man in the Bwami society. Among the Lega, in eastern Congo, the Bwami society presides over the tribe’s social and religious life. The society has six ranks for men and three ranks for women. The rank of a member of the Bwami society is displayed on a number of items (masks, jewellery, objects, ivory, etc.). They also include ‘mukuba’ hats such as this one, tightly woven from plant fibres (conical for men, round for women):
1: A ‘mukuba’ Lega hat for men of the Bwami society. Underlaid with fabric on the outside and covered with animal skin (pangolin?). Slight damage to the lower edge.
Height: 15 cm; diameter: 17 cm (below).

Height: 15 cm; diameter: 17 cm.
