Konda, Dem. Rep. of Congo: an old shortsword. The wooden hilt and scabbard are richly ornamented with decorative nails made of copper.
A shortsword of the Konda or related groups within the Mongo tribe of northwestern Congo. The double-edged iron blade broadens towards its pointed tip. The locally forged blade has three long oval recesses at its broadest part. The round wooden hilt with a thickened finial, as well as the wooden scabbard, are dyed black and feature dense patterns and trimming comprising decorative nails made of copper. The top of the scabbard has two copper carrying rings and a small recess in the middle for the sword’s hilt to sit in. A beautiful, old piece. Only very few decorative nails missing. Very old patina. Length: 52 cm (sword in sheath). Between c. 1900 and the first third of the 20th century. (ME)
