Mixed lot (2 pieces), Dem. Rep. of Congo: a so-called ‘katanga cross’ (‘primitive money’), cast of copper, and a ceremonial knife of the Ngbandi or Yakoma, from northern Congo.
1: A so-called ‘katanga cross’, a valuable object and ‘pre-numismatic form of currency’ (‘primitive money’) from southern Congo. Cast in sand forms out of copper.
Dimensions: c. 20 cm x 20 cm.
2: A double-edged ceremonial knife of the Ngbandi or Yakoma, from north-west Congo. The locally forged blade, which widens at the front of the knife, bears in the middle two round and one long recess, as well as punched line decoration of dots. Towards the hilt, the blade is offset and is divided into two, slightly curved struts. The wooden hilt is wrapped with spiral iron bands. Length: 36.5 cm. (ME)
