Kuba (or Bakuba): a mask of the ‘bwoom itok’ type.
An old mask of the Kuba, from central Congo. Carved of hard, brown wood and completely dyed black. This mask type ‘bwoom itok’ appears at the large, theatrical dance performances in the context of the three ‘royal’ mask types (‘mwaash amboy’, ‘ngaady amwaash’ and ‘bwoom’). The ‘bwoom itok’ represents a wise, old man whose advice is frequently sought by all others.
The present ‘bwoom itok mask’ shows the typical Kuba style, with the ‘privy council corners’ in the hairstyle, protruding forehead, large, broad nose and small mouth in relief.
The particular feature of the ‘bwoom itok’ type is always the round ‘chameleon eyes’, with protruding pupils. These are surrounded by small holes, through which the masked dancer looks. A visibly very old piece that was often used in dances, with a small break to the rear rim at the right. Otherwise no significant damage, yet with an excellent, old usage patina on the front and especially on the back, on the inside.
