Adouma (or Duma), Gabon: a rare mask of ‘mvudi’ type. - Mimoevropské a domorodé umění

The Adouma or Duma are a small ethnic group in central Gabon. Typical for their masks are the ‘mvudi-masks’, of which the present item is one. It has a flattened top of the head dyed black, and an arched, flat, also black face. Also the large, slightly triangular nose is black. The small, recessed mouth is rectangular and white. The object has four viewing holes for the masked dancer, two triangular ones next to the nose and two round ones. On its forehead the ‘mvudi mask’ displays a red triangle, outlined in black. The remaining part of the head, the cheeks and the border of the chin display noticeable traces of white colouring by means of kaolin. A rare piece with colour scuffing as a result of protracted use, small breaks to the back rim, as well as with a convincing, partially shiny patina on the front and especially on the back, on the inside.
