A relatively small mask of the ‘mfon’ type, from the Ibibio, who live east of the Niger Delta in south-east Nigeria. Carved of hard, brown wood and completely dyed black. ‘Mfon’ masks such as this one appear at dances of the ‘ekpo’ society. They embody spirits who come from paradise and visit the living.
The present, typical ‘mfon’ mask wears a hairstyle (or cap) with two curved crests, an arched forehead with central decorative scars, with small, protruding ears and high eyebrow arches. With almond-shaped eyes next to a short, broad nose and a slightly protruding, closed mouth. Some colour scuffing due to age on exposed areas and minimal, small breaks in the hairstyle, on the mouth (right corner of the mouth), as well as on the back rim at the top right. Otherwise no significant damage. Good, partially shiny patina at front and back, inside.
Height: 27.5 cm; width: 17.5 cm. First third of the 20th century. (ME)
Provenance: Private Collection of Prof. Dr. Rudolf Leopold, Vienna.
Lit.: ‘Die Kunst des schwarzen Afrika’ by Kerchache, Paudrat, Stephan, ill. 475, 476; ‘Encyclopedia of African Art and Culture’ by K.-F. Schädler, ill. p. 279.
