Yoruba, Nigeria: a male ‘ibeji’ twin figure, with a tall ‘hunter’s cap’. Style: Oshogbo, Oyo. - Mimoevropské a domorodé umění

A twin figure, known as ‘ibeji’ (for a more detailed explanation see cat. no. 64). The present male ‘Ibeji’ figure is carved out of hard wood, dyed dark brown. It wears a tall ‘hunter’s cap’, coloured blue by means of ‘bluing’ (‘Reckitt’s Blue’). The body shows remains of red sacrificial paste made from powdered redwood. Its broad face shows the typical, large Yoruba eyes, with an inlaid metal pupil, as well as typical tribal decorative scars on both cheeks. It wears a delicate, thin iron chain around its neck. Its hands rest on the upper thighs of the short, stocky legs and it stands with proportionally large feet on a rounded plinth. A delicate, minimal and old crack to the left side of the cap. Otherwise no damage. With a fine, shiny patina through protracted care and ministrations of this ‘ibeji’ twin figure. Style: Oshogbo, Oyo.
Height: c. 26 cm; width: c. 8 cm. First half of the 20th century. (ME)

Provenance: Private Collection of Prof. Dr. Rudolf Leopold, Vienna.
