A twin figure, known as ‘ibeji’ (for a more detailed explanation see cat. no. 64). The present, male ‘ibeji’ twin figure shows a very rare type: with a round, high, black-dyed ‘towering hairstyle’ and dressed in trousers. The relatively large hands on the arms, which are otherwise carved free from the body, rest on the hips. Standing on short legs on a rectangular plinth. Small age-related cracks to the hairstyle and trousers at the back. Otherwise no damage. Good shiny patina through protracted use.
Height: 23.5 cm; width: 8.5 cm. First half of the 20th century. (ME)
Provenance: Private Collection of Prof. Dr. Rudolf Leopold, Vienna.
Lit.: ‘Ibeji. The Cult of Yoruba Twins’ by George Chemeche, ill. 277, 278.
