Yoruba, Nigeria: a female twin figure ‘ibeji’, with a cape richly decorated with cowrie shells, as well as with a necklace and ankle chain. Style: Isayin, Oyo.
A female twin figure of the Yoruba people, known as ‘ibeji’. From south-west Nigeria (for a more detailed explanation see cat. no. 64). With a fabric cape which is adorned with tight rows of pierced cowrie shells (cowrie shells are a symbol of wealth and prosperity). The ‘ibeji’ figure itself wears a crested coiffure, coloured blue with ‘bluing’ (‘Reckitt’s Blue’), with red remains of sacrificial offerings with powdered redwood, as well as with a necklace of black, red and two coloured glass beads and with an ankle chain of black glass beads on its right foot. Standing on a round base. Good, old patina, with no damage. Style: Isayin, Oyo.
Height: 24.5 cm; width: 18 cm (with cape). First half of the 20th century. (ME)
