Senufo, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Mali: a heddle pulley with stylised female head and fine, old usage patina.

Senufo, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Mali: a heddle pulley with stylised female head and fine, old usage patina. - Mimoevropské a domorodé umění

Amongst the Senufo, these simple objects always hang in front of the weaver (always a man). Over the reel at the bottom runs a cord, by means of which the weaver – by alternating his treads on the foot pedal – separates the warp threads of his woven piece into different ‘fans’. Then the weft threads – by means of a shuttle – are ‘shot through’ these ‘fans’. Thus, fabric is created. In order to provide the weaver with ‘something beautiful’ to look at while working, the heddle pulleys are particularly finely crafted.
The present heddle pulley is carved in hard, reddish-brown wood and dyed black. It displays a finely stylised, small female head above. The original weaving reel and its axle below display an impressive, old usage patina, as does the entire piece. Note also the traces of scuffing above the suspension holes on the neck of the woman. Through these holes ran a cord, on which the heddle pulley hung on the loom of a weaver for many years. A piece with visibly very old patina. No damage.
Height: 18.5 cm; width: c. 10 cm. Between c. 1900 and the first third of the 20th century. (ME)
