Bambara (or Bamana), Mali: a small, female marionette, with movable arms.
A female marionette of the Bambara, called ‘maani’. Entertaining performances with such rod puppets, known as ‘sogo bò theatre’, are carried out by groups of youths primarily in the Ségou region.
The present ‘maani marionette’ is carved of hard wood, dyed black, and shows a very fine and accomplished head fashioned in typical Bambara style. With a rounded hairstyle resembling a crown and carved in relief, a high forehead, deep-set triangular eyes, with long, narrow nose and a small, wide, protruding mouth. The arms which hang free at the sides can both move independently, due to being connected by fabric (thin staffs are bound to their hands). The rod puppet wears a light-coloured bast skirt. There is a vertical crack due to age at the front and colour scuffing on exposed areas and edges. Otherwise no damage. It also has a good and in parts shiny usage patina.
Height: 46 cm. First half of the 20th century. (ME)
Provenance: French private collection.
Lit.: ‘Bamana’ by Jean-Paul Colleyn, Rietberg Museum, Zurich, ill. 2, 48, 62.
