Such large, woven helmet masks, called ‘Baba masks’ or ‘Baba Tagwa’, were crafted on the northern coast of New Guinea, by the tribes of the Abelam and Wosera, in the Maprik Hills (north of the well-known Sepik River). They were woven with thin strips of a sort of liana and painted with earth colours. These ‘Baba’ masks appeared as organisers and guardians at the initiations of young boys and at sacred ceremonies and harvest festivals in the yam root ritual.
The present ‘Baba’ mask of the Abelam or Wosera tribes is an old, perfectly preserved piece. Densely woven and painted grey (mud), red, yellow (ochre earth) and white (lime) with earth colours in entirely traditional style. It displays no significant damage and a good, old usage patina (at the lower edge).
Height: 41 cm; diameter: 24 cm x 22 cm (lower edge).
First half of the 20th century. (ME)
Provenance:
French private collection.
Lit.:
‘Kultur der Abelam’ by Gerd Koch, ill. 67 to 80 and 87 to 93; ‘New Guinea Art’ by Marcia & John Friede, ill. 305.
