Indonesia, Island of Sumba: a shoulder wrap or shawl, called ‘Hinggi’. Dyed in ‘Ikat’ technique with snakes with dragon heads, double-headed birds, crocodiles etc. - Mimoevropské a domorodé umění

A ‘Hinggi’ shawl from the Island of Sumba (Lesser Sunda Islands). Woven in two cotton panels and sewn together. The black-brown, light brown and white decoration is dyed in ‘Ikat’ technique (Ikat: the warp threads are bound off and coloured prior to weaving). In this ‘Hinggi’ the decoration is divided into two symmetrical halves. The main motifs on each are two large snakes with dragon heads winding about themselves, which probably symbolise the lake monster ‘Makara’. Above each of the dragon heads, four cobra heads form a sort of ‘crown’. Between each of the large snakes floats a bird with two heads, hold a crab in each of their beaks. In addition, the Sumba shawl displays further depictions of plants and animals (crocodiles, crabs, birds, butterflies etc.). On both of its narrow sides the textile is finished with rows of triangular spikes (the old ‘Tumpal’ motif). Only two minor tears to the edges. Otherwise no damage.
Dimensions: 218 cm (without fringes) x c. 112 cm.
First half to mid-20th century. (ME)

Provenance:
Viennese private collection.
