This type of snail bangle, each with one high tip, is worn in Nepal by the Dolpa or Lhomi women, as well as in the central highlands of Tibet. The women wear only a single one of these bracelets on the wrist of their right hand, with the tip upwards, towards the elbow. This type of snail bangle is also considered to be a protective amulet. Such snail bangles are cut from the white shells of the sea snail ‘Xancus pyrum’, which only come from the Bay of Bengal and from there are traded a far as Tibet. Both of the present specimens display a beautiful, old usage patina, good, smooth traces of wear, nevertheless no significant damage.
Height: 12 cm and 13 cm; diameter: each c. 5.4 cm (the hole for the wearer’s hand).
First half of the 20th century. (ME)
