Bhutan: a mask for ‘Cham dances’, which features a red version of the tutelary god ‘Mahakala’ (usually blue). - Mimoevropské a domorodé umění

A mask for the ritual Buddhist-Lamaistic ‘Cham dances’ from the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan. This ‘Cham mask’, made of hard wood, is painted mostly red, with yellow, blue, white and black accents. It likely features a ‘Gonpo’, an attendant of the large tutelary god ‘Mahakala’, who is always depicted with a blue face. The mask displays a ‘crown’ consisting of five skulls, a ‘third eye’ on the forehead, a large, open mouth with four teeth carved out from the same piece, as well as a beard. The masked dancer looks not through the large eyes, but rather through the nostrils of the large, upwardly curving nose. A piece with a small crack and loss on the back rim, as well as with colour scuffing on the exposed areas through protracted use (on the nose, cheeks). Good, shiny patina on the back, on the inside, through protracted use.
Height: 28 cm; width: 21 cm.
First half of the 20th century. (ME)
