Burma (Myanmar): seated figure of a female worshipper, gilded and lavishly decorated.
Seated ‘worshippers’ (pupils, servants) such as the present one are subordinate figures in larger Burmese ‘Theravada Buddhist’ altars. Carved from hard, heavy wood, including the base plate, it has been accentuated with red and black lacquer. The figure sits, slightly to the side, on crossed legs. Arms and hands rest on the upper and lower leg. She wears a court style jacket, including a narrow sash on her front. The bonnet on her head has an upward projection in the form of an ‘elephant trunk’. The clothing of the ‘worshipper’ is lavishly decorated in the ‘Thayo technique’ with bands in shape of waves, volutes, rhombuses and studs (for a more detailed explanation see cat. no. 226), as well as green, blue, red and white mirrored plates in the form of lines, rosettes and dots. The eyes consist of white ceramic with black painted pupils. The whole figure displays noticeable, widespread remains of comprehensive leaf gilding. The colour is slightly scuffed, otherwise there is no damage. A carefully crafted, charming and highly decorative object.
Dimensions: 73 cm x 40 cm x 41 cm.
Between the end of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century. (ME)
