The Naga, once feared head-hunters, live right in eastern India (Nagaland, Manipur) and on both sides of the border to Burma (Myanmar). Only important Naga warriors were entitled to own and wear upper arm bracelets such as these made of ivory. The present pair of such ‘Naga bracelets’ (2 items), with all-round grooves, accentuated edges (on the outside) and gently retracted outer surfaces, are evidently made of very old ivory. They have a beautiful, old craquelure and honey-coloured, speckled and darkened surfaces on the outside and especially on the inside (ivory naturally darkens and over time). One of the two bracelets displays two cracks due to age (however they do not go all the way through the bracelet). Otherwise no damage. Nowadays it is rare to find such beautiful, old ivory Naga bracelets as these.
Height: each c. 5 cm; diameter: each c. 10 cm x 11 cm (on the outside). About 1.5 cm to 2 cm thick.
