Afghanistan, Nuristan: a typical spiral choker from Nuristan, Northeastern Afghanistan. Made of very high quality silver and set with two blue glass stones. - Mimoevropské a domorodé umění

Nuristan, three large valley communities on the western edge of the Hindu Kush Mountains, was forcibly Islamised by the Afghan leader Abdur Rahman in 1895/1896 and was renamed Nuristan (‘Land of Light’). The inhabitants of Nuristan were formerly known as ‘Kafirs’ (‘non-believers’). They had their own languages, religion and culture. The present choker is typical of the old culture of Nuristan. It is made of high quality silver. The main part is curled in spirals with an additional insert of thin, twisted silver wire. The ends are bud shaped and curl outwards, they are smooth in parts and are also, in parts, decoratively engraved and punched. On each side of the necklace there is a flat silver plate, round with triangular ends and punched. In the round centre of each one sits a large, blue glass stone. A very beautiful, old Nuristan choker, characteristically designed. No damage.
Diameter: 16 cm x c. 17 cm.
Between the 19th and the early 20th centuries. (ME)
