Turkey, Ottoman: a rare, old, round woven Ottoman shield, known as ‘Kalkan shield’. With ray skin and iron. 17th/18th century. - Mimoevropské a domorodé umění

A very rare, Ottoman round shield. The basic structure of this ‘Kalkan shield’ dates back to the purely woven shields of the Mongols and early Turks in the 15th and 16th centuries:
thin plant rods are spirally plaited around a wooden disc, they are then stitched securely with fabric threads. Later, during the Ottoman Empire these constructions were strengthened with iron struts and an iron border. The ‘Kalkan’ battle shield was thus able to protect both against arrows as well as against sword blows:
the present Ottoman ‘Kalkan’ round shield displays a central, round decorative circle made from ray skin on top of which is an iron shield boss. It is surrounded by eight further, smaller decorative bosses. The shield is reinforced by a surrounding iron border and 28 diagonally placed iron struts. The reverse side is covered with an old, light brown fabric and has a plaited leather hilt on a leather cushion to support the hand. Historically this is an extremely interesting piece and is in very good condition. No significant damage.
Diameter: 38 cm.
17th/18th century. (ME)
