A stool of the Tsonga people, whose language group is disseminated over wide areas and countries of southern Africa. Amongst the Tsonga, only the men of the household are allowed to sit on stools of this type. The stool is carved from a single piece of hard wood and coloured blackish-brown. With a thick, round seat and standing surface. The two plank-like supports in between are parallel to each other and are decorated on their exterior with ornamental deep grooved triangles and lozenges. An old crack to the foot of the stool at the bottom. Otherwise no damage. With very good, old usage patina, especially on the seat surface.
Height: 25 cm; diameter: c., 23 cm (seat).
