A ‘hand cross’ belonging to a religious figure (bishop or priest) of the Ethiopian Christian Church. Made of cast brass, pierced and with openwork, as well as a linear engraved row of letters and contours. It is surmounted by a cross with ‘ram’s horn volutes’ and an one-line inscription on the front side. Three of the equal length arms of the central cross terminate in three smaller crosses, in the form of a ‘Maltese cross’, as well as in small decorative spheres. Further down is an eight-sided shaft as a handle, with thickened ends. Appended to this is a hollow cast cube, with openwork and engraved leaf decoration (rare). Under this cube are tiers of a round pommel, a pierced eyelet for a carrying cord, and another ‘Maltese cross’ with engraved contours and small decorative spheres. Good traces of use, especially on the hilt area, no appreciable damage.
Length: 29.5 cm; width: 12.2 cm (the cross alone, without base).
17th / 18th century. (ME)
Provenance:
Purchased in Addis Abeba, since then: Belgian private collection.
