Mongo tribe, Dem. Rep. of Congo: a wooden shield traditionally used by certain tribes of the Mongo tribes (Saka, Ngandu etc.) in the north-west rain forest of the Congo.
The oblong shield was carved of a piece of relatively thin wood, including the grip on the back. The facade is divided into five fields by means of two vertical reinforcement bulges, and by a transverse field; these are alternatingly coloured black and white. The back is black. At the top a hanging cord of vegetal rattan strips is attached through two holes. A piece with only minimal damage (gashes, some breakage) and colour abrasion. The very good, shiny patina on the grip at the back points to long usage.
