Ibibio, Nigeria: a large, black mask of the Ibibio, from south-east Nigeria. - Mimoevropské a domorodé umění

Such large, expressive masks, called ‘Idiok masks’, represent spirits and belong to dances of the ‘Ekpo community’ of the Ibibio, who live east of the Niger Delta in south-east Nigeria. The present mask is carved in hard, brown wood and completely dyed black. It displays a domed forehead, large, dominant decorative scars on both temples, which are often characteristic for Ibibio masks. The round eyes are set close to the short, wide nose. The mouth is open and displays two rows of teeth, each with four teeth, carved out from the same piece. A magnificent, old and very impressive piece of its kind, with some colour scuffing due to age on exposed areas and edges. Otherwise no damage. With good and in parts shiny usage patina at the front and behind, inside.
