Baule, Ivory Coast: an oval pendant made of gold, with the representation of a face (or of a mask).
An extremely well-worked, oval pendant made of pure gold. The central, protruding face (or mask) in relief is represented in typical Baule style. With broadly extending eyebrow arches, long, flat nose and typical tribal scarification marks on the bridge of the nose and on both cheeks. Surrounded by an openwork decoration consisting of circles and outer bands. The item was executed in a single piece with ‘waste mould’ casting made of gold. A small fracture to the forehead. Two pendant eyelets in the upper section (one broken). Otherwise no damage.
Dimensions: 7.5 cm x 6.3 cm.
