In den 1950ies famous marine researchers such as Jacques Cousteau or Hans Hass through their reports and film documentaries raised the level of interest in diving as a sport. Contemporaneously, watch makers began to develop waterproof watches able to meet the requirements of such activities.
The reference 6204 is considered the first Rolex Submariner and was produced only for the very short period of one year until 1954. The present model had its dial retooled at a later date, and the strap was likewise replaced by one matching the reference 6204. The movement is in working condition and shows typical signs of wear and tear. With a diameter of 37mm, comparatively small for a Submariner, the watch is elegant in appearance.
